England boss Gareth Southgate insists he is ‘just as emotional as everybody else’ after a rare flash of anger during the 1-1 draw with Germany.

And the Three Lions manager also told talkSPORT he cheekily tried to get away with a fourth substitution.

Harry Kane was on hand to rescue a point for England in their Nations League clash at the Allianz Arena, converting a penalty that he won in the 87th minute after Jonas Hofman’s opener.

It avoided back-to-back England defeats for the first time since 2018, following their 1-0 loss to Hungary on Saturday.

Towards the end of the match, Southgate was seen raging at the German bench as the hosts failed to kick the ball out of play for an injured Jude Bellingham, instead chasing a winner.

“That’s the emotion of the moment,” Southgate explained on talkSPORT.

“We’re wanting to respond to a difficult defeat and this was a big game for us.

“I know most of the time I keep my calm, but I am as emotional as everybody else and I do want to win as much as everybody else.

“Just because I don’t behave like a screaming banshee on the touchline doesn’t mean that I care any less than other people.”

England had already lost Kalvin Phillips to injury and Southgate admits the post-season international fixtures have been physically demanding for his players.

“We’re very aware that this series of games, you look at what all the countries around Europe are doing, they’re challenging the players,” he said.

“They’re conscious of player welfare, but teams are preparing for the World Cup.

“We have to consider that for the next game because it was a phenomenal effort tonight, they left a lot on the pitch.

“I’ve played in games like tonight and it takes absolutely everything to get a result.”

That is why Southgate was determined to bring on Reece James for Kieran Trippier in the second-half, even though three changes had been made already.

Following a conversation with the officials, James was sent back to the bench – and Southgate revealed he had not simply forgotten the first substitution.

“That’s why we asked the question, we wanted to do it but we realised we had the one from the first-half,” he explained.

“We were trying it on, really.”
