Newcastle tipped to win title before Man United and follow Chelsea and City model

Newcastle have been forced to live with the memory of Kevin Keegan’s infamous rant in 1996.

In many ways, it’s been downhill since then, as Manchester United overcame a huge deficit to deny the Magpies a first Premier League title, and sent the two clubs in very different directions for the next 26 years.

However, Jason Cundy believes the balance is about to shift in Newcastle’s favour.

The Toon might be 17th in the table and fighting relegation, but the fruit of their Saudi-backed takeover is already beginning to show.

Following some impressive business in the January transfer window, Newcastle have won three Premier League matches on the spin.

Manchester United, meanwhile, appear no closer to challenging for the title than they have in the nine years since Sir Alex retired.

The Red Devils, despite their wealth of superstar talent, are struggling to qualify for the Champions League this season.

Asked a simple question whether Man United or Newcastle will win the title first in the coming years, ex-Chelsea defender Cundy had a surprising answer.

“I’d probably go Newcastle,” he told talkSPORT.

“Look at what Man City have done with their millions, look at what Chelsea have done with their millions.

“Neither of those clubs are in it to make money. Their models are about glory, not pound notes.

“Manchester United, right now, their priority isn’t glory, it’s about pound notes.”

He added: “Newcastle will spend whatever they like. Manchester United, under the Glazers, have been known to watch their pennies.

“It’s all about recruitment and Newcastle’s, in this situation, has been superb.”

Cundy’s beloved Blues did not wait long for their first title in 2005, two years after Roman Abramovich bought the club.

And ex-Man City winger Trevor Sinclair, who watched a similar revolution at his former club in recent years, agrees with Cundy.

He told talkSPORT: “I think there is a good argument to say Newcastle will get it right before Man United.

“United have had nine years to have a run at this and they’re still nowhere near.

“Whereas Newcastle, if they get it right, could quite easily win the title before Man United.”

However, ex-England striker Darren Bent wasn’t having any of it.

He told talkSPORT: “I agree that neither will win it any time soon.

“But you have to look at where they are and the platform they’re starting from.

“Man United are a lot closer now than Newcastle, so you would have to say United. Newcastle are in a relegation battle.”
