Jack Colback’s Marco Van Basten-esque worldie helped Nottingham Forest to a 4-0 win over West Brom and ensured Fulham would be made to wait for promotion back to the Premier League.

Forest put on a dominant display in front of their fans on Monday night, as they defeated the ten-man Baggies.

Brennan Johnson’s penalty and a Ryan Yates header put Steve Cooper’s men in charge before Sam Surridge’s stoppage-time strike completed the rout.

But the standout goal of the night came on the stroke of half time as Colback incredibly cracked a volley over the despairing David Button.

It was a phenomenal goal from distance and a tight angle by Colback, with talkSPORT’s Danny Kelly comparing it to Dutch football icon Van Basten’s iconic strike in the final of the European Championship in 1988.

“Of course, I meant it”, said Colback smiling and smirking to the reporter post-match.

“No, I hit it towards goal and hoped for the best and thankfully it went in.”

His team-mate James Garner added: “I’m not sure if he meant it but I know he’s got the technique.”

It was a stress-free evening for fifth-placed Forest, who are now seven points off second-placed Bournemouth with five matches to go.

But their evening was made all the more easier when they were awarded a penalty and given a man advantage as Darnell Furlong was sent off for a second bookable offence when he handled in the area.

The in-form Johnson slotted home the resultant penalty to put the hosts 1-0 to the good.

Yates put Forest two goals up on 23 minutes, heading home from a corner. Colback then made it 3-0 with his sublime finish on the volley from down by the corner flag.

Forest continued where they left off in the first-half, and Surridge smashed home a fourth with the last kick of the match.

Forest’s victory means Fulham’s celebrations from their inevitable promotion remain on ice but a win against Preston on Tuesday will confirm their return to the Premier League.
