Premier League new boys Brentford have the chance to become the first newly-promoted Premier League side to do the double over Arsenal in almost 30 years this Saturday.

Following their shock 2-0 victory over the Gunners on the opening day of the season, the Bees could replicate a feat last achieved by Blackburn Rovers in 1992/93.

Arsenal and Brentford‘s first league meeting since 1947 was one for the history books, with Thomas Frank’s side running rampant against the shaky Gunners.

The were celebrated for an incredible start to the campaign, while Mikel Arteta‘s men were heavily criticised for their opening day display.

Labelled as ‘weak and pathetic’ by Premier League legend Jamie Carragher, they were slammed for their defensive errors and inability to finish their chances.

It only got worse for the Gunners following their defeat at the Brentford Community Stadium too, as they went on to suffer their worst Premier League season start in 67 years, putting Arteta under intense pressure.

Fast forward to today though, and the former Arsenal player’s side have completely turned their season around, with relegation frets a distant memory and finishing in the top four being the focus instead.

So when better for the north London side to demonstrate their hunger for a Champions League spot than against the team that began their torrid run of form at the start of the campaign?

Speaking ahead of this weekend’s game at the Emirates, which you can hear live on talkSPORT 2, Arteta said: “We have to win tomorrow and then we’ll be closer to that objective [finishing in the top four].

“There’s still a long way to go, lots of things are going to change and we have to be ready to play within the context that this is going to happen.”

Meanwhile for Brentford, a second win over the Gunners would not only see them match Blackburn Rovers, it would most importantly help them in their bid to secure their Premier League status for next season.

The Bees currently sit 14th in the league, and whilst their position is no immediate cause for alarm, they have lost four of their last five games, picking up one point in a 0-0 draw against Crystal Palace.

This, combined with the likes of Newcastle and Everton advancing up the table with games in hand, means Frank will be keen for his side claim all three points to extend their gap above those below.
