Arsenal should’ve got ‘world class’ Antonio Conte before Tottenham did and the Gunners will miss out on the top four with Mikel Arteta in charge.
That’s according to Arsenal fan and former youth striker for the Gunners, Jay Bothroyd, who believes Arteta lacks ‘leadership qualities’, which he says was evident in their 3-0 defeat to Spurs on Thursday.
Bothroyd, who came through the academy at the north London club, was left fuming with the Gunners’ performance at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.
And the ex-Cardiff and QPR striker believes that his former side will now miss out on a place in the top four due to the lack of belief in the ranks.
Bothroyd said on Kick Off: “How well have Arsenal done against the top six?
“They’ve been shocking. Their record is shocking and this is going to continue next year.
“If Arsenal do get in the Champions League, I wonder what they’ll be like then when they’re in four competitions.
And when told they can still make the top four, he added: “I can’t see that happening now.
“This will really hurt the squad and this will really break the morale.
“We don’t have characters in our squad, you can see that today. No one stepped up and said, ‘Let’s get together, we can still do this.
“There was no belief in that performance tonight.”
Conte was in the opposite dugout to Arteta on Thursday night, masterminding a win that takes Spurs one point behind their north London rivals.
And Bothroyd believes that Conte should’ve been appointed by Arsenal before Tottenham managed to get the Italian, who Bothroyd labelled as ‘one of the best managers in the world.’
“These are the kinds of game where I question Arteta’s leadership qualities,” Bothroyd added.
“This is what makes me question whether he’s the right man for the job.
“I don’t see leadership qualities at all.
“No one is out there talking, no one is bossing people around.
“It’s poor, it’s mentally weak, and that stems from Arteta. Unfortunately, these are the kind of games where I question him.
“You can play against teams like Brighton and Burnley, where Arsenal win games and you say, ‘Oh, he’s great’, and so on.
“I don’t think this would happen with Conte.
“This is why I was I was saying I wish Arsenal just took Conte before Tottenham did, because they would have, arguably, one of the best managers in the world.”
