Alex Crook believes that Arsenal must spend ‘big money’ in January if they’re to stand any chance of challenging for the Premier League title.
After missing out on the top four last term, the Gunners have been one of the top flight’s surprise packages after winning 10 of their opening 12 fixtures in the league, losing just once in the process.
As a result, Mikel Arteta’s side are sitting at the top of the tree and two points ahead of title favourites Manchester City.
While no one can dispute that Arsenal are deservedly leading the race for the title, it remains to be seen whether the Gunners can last the pace given the quality and quantity of top-level stars at clubs such as City, Liverpool and Chelsea.
With the World Cup approaching, Arsenal are just a few matches away from the start of the January transfer window and according to talkSPORT’s football correspondent Crook, it’s essential that the Gunners strengthen if they’re to match their rivals for squad depth.
Speaking on The Boot Room, Crooks said: “If they are still top of the table when that World Cup break comes around then do the Arsenal board have some decisions to make in January?
“My issue with Arsenal when it comes to challenging for the title is not just how good Manchester City are and how good Erling Haaland is, but it’s the lack of squad depth.
“We saw that in the Europa League because they were poor against PSV on Thursday night, no question about that.
“Gabriel Jesus, when he doesn’t play Eddie Nketiah comes in who has scored no goals in 12 in the Premier League. If you rest Partey or Xhaka then Lokonga comes in as the backup – not good enough for me.
“Even at left-back they miss Zinchenko. Tierney is not quite the force that he was even last season.
“If they are still there, the only way that they can really challenge for the title is if the owners go out again and back Mikel Arteta with big money.”
