Mexico beat Venezula 3-1 on Wednesday in the first of two U.S.-based friendlies ahead of the Gold Cup tournament.

The game was a triumphant return for Mexico manager Gerardo “Tata” Martino to Mercedes-Benz Stadium, where he led Atlanta United to the 2018 MLS Cup before taking over for El Tri.

Venezuela took the lead when Jhon Murillo in the 18th minute, but Roberto Alvarado equalized for Mexico in the 32nd minute with a close-range shot.

Mexico took the lead off Rodolfo Pizarro‘s score in the 54th minute and sealed the game when captain Andres Guardado put one past Vinotinto goalkeeper Wuilker Farinez.

Mexico next plays Ecuador in Arlington, Texas, on Sunday as its final tuneup before the Gold Cup. Venezuela goes to Cincinnati to play the United States before heading to Brazil to participate in the Copa America.
